Shri Krishna Janmashtami 2010 is celebrated all over the country and world with great thrill and enthusiasm today. September 2 is the date when several cultural and religious organizations are celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. Colorful cultural programs are also held in various educational institutions on this occasion and students and children staged shows and Raas Leela which is the dramatic enactment of Krishna’s life depicting the glimpses of birth of Lord Krishna.
Various temples also celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna on Krishna Janmashtami with the singing of bhajans and offerings prayers to the Lord. Idols of Krishna are bathed and draped with new set of clothes and offered Prasad on the occasion. Followers of Shri Krishna keep a fast on this day and avoid eating cereals till midnight which is the time when Lord Krishna was given birth by Devki in captivity.
After midnight songs and bhajans are recited to the Lord together and Prasad is offered to celebrate the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Krishna on this Earth to destroy evil and save mankind. The festival is celebrated in many ways all over the country. In the north of India at Vrindavan which is seen as the place where Krishna spent his entire childhood special celebrations are held that include Jhanki, Gita recital and staging of Raas Leela. In the west the festival is celebrated by a special event called Dhahi Handi where groups of young boys pile upon each other to grab the Handi placed at a height, the way Krishna used to do in his childhood to steal butter. The winner is awarded with a cash prize.
Shri Krishna Janmashtami which is also called Gokulashtami is obsereved on Ashtami tithi according to Hindu calendar. Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of Bhadrapad month (Ashtam). There are 100 names with which we call Krishna and the most popular are Murari, Murli Manohar, Bansi Dhar as the Lord used to play flute and in all his images we can see Krishna with his favorite flute.
