Janmashtami festivities Dahi Handi a popular sport in and around Mumbai with several places offering a huge money. Janmashtami Govindas are young men who form a human pyramid to reach to break the ‘dahi handi’ or pot of curd suspended high.
As per the latest reports Mumbai’s Thane city have announced a Rs.25 lakh prize money for the Govindas.

This mega event is expected to continue throughout the day and late into the night.
Krishna Janmashtmi is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravan in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant. In 2010, the festival Janmastmi will be celebrated on 2nd September.

Dahi Handi is observed a day after Sri Krishna Jayanti mainly in Maharashtra and Goa. In 2010, the date of Dahi Handi is September 2. Sri Krishna Jayanti in Maharashtra is on September 1. The Dahi Handi pot contains Dahi poha – a mixture of beaten rice (poha), curd, sugar and pickle. The pot is also decorated with flowers and currency notes.
The young boys in the region form human pyramids, sometimes reaching up to eleven stories, to reach the pot.
