Cautioning divisive forces against talking of an independent Kashmir or merging with Pakistan, National Conference leader and Union minister, Farooq Abdullah, said Kashmir would remain an integral part of India forever.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 22nd Pune Festival at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch in Pune on Friday evening. Pune Festival founder president and MP, Suresh Kalmadi, state ministers Narayan Rane, Patangrao Kadam, Harshawardhan Patil, Ramesh Bagwe and mayor Mohansingh Rajpal were present on the dais.

Vocalist Kishori Amonkar, chairperson of Thermax Social Initiative, Anu Aga, and Serum Institute of India chairman and managing director, Cyrus Poonawala, were felicitated with the Pune Festival 2010 awards.

In a passionate appeal to citizens, Abdullah said, “My son is facing a serious challenge in Kashmir and he needs your prayers and blessings.” He said the divisive forces that talk of an independent Kashmir are not voicing the sentiments of the Kashmiri people, but are a minuscule minority.

He said many children and security personnel had died in Kashmir in the recent incidents. “That is the price India has had to pay for maintaining unity. No one can stop India from rising and becoming a superpower. We have to tell our neighbours that India never had any territorial interest.”

Anu Aga appealed to citizens to raise their voice against haphazard growth and lack of basic infrastructure in the city. She said such awards reminded her to work more for the downtrodden.
