Lucknow: A week from now the verdict will be out in one of the country's most contentious cases, the Ayodha land title dispute. As security tightens across UP, both parties to the dispute have called for restraint.
A three-judge bench comprising of Justice SU Khan, Justice Sudhir Agarwal, Justice DV Sharma will deliver the verdict at 3:30 PM on September 24.
The battle over Ayodhya has gone on for decades. Now, as the verdict approaches, residents of Ayodhya are tired of the political upheavals their city inspires.
The Mayawati government is taking no chances, and Ayodhya is barricaded, shut down and policed at every turn. Local residents appear cynical and weary, the fallout of living in a town caught in a time warp.
There has always been a difference between Ayodhya the myth and Ayodhya the reality. Those enamoured of its myth get easily galvanized by its political symbolism. But here in Ayodhya those who actually live its reality, are apathetic to the storm their city inspires.
For a whole new generation who has grown up since 1992, the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute is a waste of time.
But while the emotional fervour of the Ayodhya issue seems to have diminished, its political resonance is unmistakable.
Ayodhya, the town seems to have fallen off the map of modern India, but Ayodhya the political symbol lives on.
Meanwhile, on Friday the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court refused to defer the September 24 verdict in the 60-year-old title suit Ayodhya title dispute case. The Court announced that the verdict would be announced on September 24 while dismissing three petitions asking for postponement of the verdict.
