The weather office has sounded cyclone alert to coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rainfall is expected to lash the coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea.
Cyclone Jal at present is moving along with eastern and northern coasts of Sri Lanka.
The storm will bring rain or thundershowers at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh from Saturday morning, it said.
Further, gusty winds reaching around 65-75 kph would be witnessed along and off North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coast from Saturday and these may increase upto 120-140 kph at the time of landfall.
Sea conditions will be very rough to high, along and off these coasts, becoming phenomenal at the time of landfall, the weather office said.
Expected damage included minor damage to power and communication lines, it said, adding, total suspension of fishing activities had been suggested with fishermen being advised against veturing into the sea. The system was under constant surveillance, they said.
Meanwhile, rainfall occurred at many places over interior Tamil Nadu and coastal parts of the state with Avinashi receiving a maximum of 14 cm rainfall
