Bengali actor-director Dilip Roy died here today after a prolonged battle with cancer, his family sources said. Roy, 79, was a bachelor and is survived by three adopted sons.

Kolkata, Sep 2 (PTI) Well-known Bengali actor-director Dilip Roy died here today after a prolonged battle with cancer, his family sources said. Roy, 79, was a bachelor and is survived by three adopted sons.
He also had an adopted daughter who passed away earlier this year. Born on December 17, 1931, in Chittagong, now in Bangladesh, Roy moved to the residence of his elder brother at Neamatpur in Burdwan district where he had his education.
Coming over to Kolkata in the mid-fifties with the intention of making it to the Bengali big screen, Roy began his struggle in the studios of Tollygunge. His first break came in ''Parivar''.
He appeared in 44 films in various roles in a career spanning over two decades. Roy''s directorial ventures include ''Neelkantha'', ''Debdas'', and ''Amrita Kumbher Sandhaney'' which became a hit.
He was also the cinematographer in the Bengali film ''Bhalobasa Bhalobasa,'' besides the Oriya ''Tu Eka Aama Saha Bharasa'', ''Mamata Ra Dori'', and ''Chaka Bhaunri''. In his later years, Roy took to the stage, acting in a popular genre of Bengali theatre known as ''Jatra''.
